چکیده

A new method for extracting the drainage network from a digital elevation model (DEM) is presented. It is based on the well-known D8 approach that simulates the overland flow but uses a more elaborate water transfer model that is inspired by the natural behaviour of water. The proposed solution has several advantages: it works on unprocessed DEMs avoiding the problems caused by pits and flats, can generate watercourses with a width greater than one cell and detects fluvial landforms like lakes, marshes or river islands that are not directly handled by most previous solutions. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Automated suitable drainage network extraction from digital elevation models in Taiwan's upstream watersheds

Automatically extracting drainage networks from digital elevation models coupled with the constant stream threshold value is a regular method. These extracted networks can be verified by comparing the channel initiation points with those from real networks. From the results analysed, the differences in channel initiation points will affect the network geometries, geomorphological indices and hy...

Carving and adaptive drainage enforcement of grid digital elevation models

[1] An effective and widely used method for removing spurious pits in digital elevation models consists of filling them until they overflow. However, this method sometimes creates large flat regions which in turn pose a problem for the determination of accurate flow directions. In this study, we propose to suppress each pit by creating a descending path from it to the nearest point having a low...

Improving Low-Relief Coastal LiDAR DEMs with Hydro-Conditioning of Fine-Scale and Artificial Drainages

Improvements in Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology and spatial analysis of high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) have advanced the accuracy and diversity of applications for coastal hazards and natural resources management. This article presents a concise synthesis of LiDAR analysis for coastal flooding and management applications in low-relief coastal plains and a case st...

A BOINC based System for Global Topographic Structure Extraction Using SRTM Digital Elevation Models

A public computing project named Terrain@home, is built on BOINC for extracting terrain features from global scope DEM data. Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), which is a near global scope database of high accuracy elevation data, is selected as test data for Terrain@home. Conventional algorithms for terrain features auto extracting for example slope gradient, delineating drainage network...

Advances in the mapping of flow networks from digital elevation data

Digital elevation models (DEMs) are a useful data source for the automatic delineation of flow paths, sub watersheds and flow networks for hydrologic modeling. Digital representation of the flow network is central to distributed hydrologic models because it encodes the model element linkages through which flow is routed to the outlet. The scale (drainage density) of the flow network, used contr...
